To these there were added in the same year Six Philosophical Lectures, and in the year 1874, Four Psycho logical Lectures.

The two first reached a second edition in 1872 Besides this, he is an industrious contributor to the Vicrtheiljahrsschrift, to Fichte s Zeitschrift, to the Heidelberg and Berlin fahrbiichcr, to journals of light literature, all of which contain highly valuable treatises from his pen.

With the exception of the epoch-making Kant, upon whose shoulders we all stand, Fortlage rates no philosopher so high as Fichte.

Since he takes the absolute autonomy for his starting-point, which Kant reaches by analytic and psychological methods, and from which everything is deduced synthetically, begin ning at the top and going downwards, he irrevocably trans forms philosophy into pantheism.

This pantheism, however, is of a transcendental sort ; for the Absolute, the identity which rises superior to the contrast of subject and object, does not enter into this contrast, into the world of appearance or phenomena, and is not immanent in it.
